Finger Lakes Woodturners |

The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 5th at 7PM in room 07-2470 at RIT. The featured speaker will be Tom Farrar of Farrar Technologies. Tom makes various tools for turners and woodworkers. Tom will try to sort out the various types of steels, their qualities, heat treating, and tool making for the non-metal worker. Tom will have tool blanks for display and for sale.
Don't forget to bring your items for the Instant Gallery. It can be new, old, or in between. As long as it's turned, it's welcome.
The membership is being polled for ideas for future presentations. If there is a special topic that you would like to see presented, speak up and let us know. If you have one that you would be willing to present, let us know that as well.
The Finger Lakes WoodTurners Board of Directors meeting was held at Bill Tschorke’s home on 1/15/01 and Bill, Don Osborne and Ed DeMay were present. Doug Crittenden was out of town.
Don advised the we have 30 members paid up for the 2001 turning season, and Don will be checking the members of the SIG to insure that they are also members of RWS as is required by the by-laws of the SIG.
The BOD discussed numerous ideas for speakers for the monthly meetings. The discussion centered on keeping all members of the SIG satisfied with presenters especially with the wide variety of turning experience with in the SIG. We are aware that it is virtually impossible to satisfy everyone each month but we will make an attempt. The BOD is open to any suggestion from the members for ideas. We hope that some of the senior members of the SIG will volunteer if they have a specialty as Ralph Mosher and Jim Echter have done. The BOD feels that the main function of the SIG should be to pass on the skills and techniques of turning to all members to improve the craft.
Ed DeMay said that he would make several contacts for the next speaker
Meeting was adjourned after a tour of Bill’s shop,

The January meeting of the Finger Lakes Woodturners was called to order by Kurt Hertzog filling in for Doug Crittenden. The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Don Osborne reported that the SIG now has $935.00.
Kurt reported that the vacuum pumps are coming in sporadically and will be available a few at a time. They are coming from a member of the Buffalo group and he gets them only in limited quantities, but - patience is a virtue.
George Hatfield is coming as it looks now on September 8 and 9 – mark these dates in your calendar. The exact price for the seminar has not been established as of yet. George comes highly recommended from several members that have seen his presentation. George’s background is in production spindle turning and since production turning is just what the name implies I am sure that he will have a bag full of hints to make turning in general go faster and better.
The "Instant Gallery" is growing with each meeting and there was a good selection of bowls, mushrooms and candlesticks.
The featured speaker for the evening was Jim Echter on the "Taming of the Skew" Jim showed a variety of cuts including peeling, planing and slicing. He also showed several variations of grinds and explained the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is obvious the Jim has put many hours into learning the uses and advantages for this sometimes difficult and most often misunderstood tool. Several members were able to do some practice cuts under Jim’s watchful eye.
The meeting was closed at approx. 9:00 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Edward DeMay, Secretary
