Finger Lakes Woodturners |

The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 7th at 7PM in room 07-2470 at RIT. The presentation will be made by representatives of Norton Abrasives. They will be discussing abrasives, abrasive tools, and sharpening.
Don't forget to bring your items for the Instant Gallery. It can be new, old, or in between. As long as it's turned, it's welcome.
Ed Lehman is donating some wood for the SIG to auction off at the next meeting. There will be some ironwood, silver maple and wild cherry all in disc form and between 3" and 4" thick. Some have natural edges. This is very generous on Ed's part and we appreciate it
The Board of Directors is proposing a By-Laws change. It is proposed that the SIG membership year coincide with the RWS membership year, since members of the SIG must maintain concurrent membership. The SIG membership year would run from September 1st to September 1st, beginning this September. There will be a vote on this proposed change at the next meeting.
The membership is being polled for ideas for future presentations. If there is a special topic that you would like to see presented, speak up and let us know. If you have one that you would be willing to present, let us know that as well.
Minutes of the regular membership meeting held at RIT on Monday, April 2nd, 2001
Bill Tschorke opened meeting at 7PM.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as released.
Don Osborne reported that the treasury was in excellent shape with a balance of $1119.09 with no outstanding bills.
Bill welcomed guests Ky and Jack Feng, and Bill Tschorke.
Kurt Hertzog requested volunteers for the RWS exhibit at the opening of the new Woodcraft store on Saturday, April 7th. He also reported that George Hatfield would be conducting a turning seminar during the first week of September. More information to come. He passed around the mailing list to record additions and corrections.
Don Osborne passed out flyers and discount sheets from Woodcraft.
Instant Gallery projects were presented by Bob McFadden, Ed Lehman, Mike Brawley, Don Yokel, Bill Tschorke, Dave Schwardt, Jim Hotaling, George Reiner, and Jim Echter. Kevin Erskine, a guest, talked about his glued up vase.
Kurt Hertzog showed a mask for turning. A discussion reviewed the need for protective devices and those that would protect the turner’s health, especially the AirMate unit.
Ralph Mosher, our guest turner, set up Denny Brunner’s lathe and began to explain in detail the planning and turning of a Christmas ornament. As always, Ralph’s knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm were appreciated by all. He raffled off the completed ornament for $36, which he donated to the organization. Dave Schwardt won the raffle.
Bill thanked Ralph and closed the meeting at 9PM.
Thirty-two members and guests were present.

The Fingerlakes Woodturners BOD meeting was held on 4/24/01 with all members in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM at Doug Crittenden's home.
All members are requested to check their VHS tapes and bring any belonging to the AAW chapter with them into the next meeting. Also return any you have to RWS. One member relayed the story when he was checking through a box of old childrens tapes and found a tape that had inadvertently been placed with them. So, please take a moment to look around, just in case.
Doug Crittenden has AAW membership forms and AAW Symposium applications for the July 6 - July 8, 2001 meeting in ST. Paul, MN. The BOD will be meeting with Sean at Woodcraft, at their Jefferson Rd. store, before our next SIG meeting to finalize plans to have our monthly meetings there. They offer us a free place to hold our meetings, 6 mini lathes and eventually a larger lathe, and a fine meeting and teaching and demo place. They will also mention our upcoming events in their advertisements. Looks like a win/win situation. It is anticipated that we will start meeting there in September. The BOD will be sending a letter to RIT and Steve Loar expressing our gratitude to them for the years that we have met there. We are also inviting RIT students to attend our monthly meetings as we have done in the past.
It was decided unanimously, by the BOD, to require that all members attending our meetings be required to wear either " slip on " safety glasses or a face shield while a lathe or other machinery is operating. This is no different than you do or should be doing at home. As was reported in the spring issue of the American Woodturner, Dave Lancaster was severely injured when a bowl blew apart. Dave said he was not even touching the bowl when it let go!! 28 stitches and two ugly looking black eyes later Dave has now started to wear a hockey style mask when the lathe is rotating, period. We have been lucky so far. Lets not push it! So, don’t forget yours when a demo is scheduled. If anyone has access to free industrial plant type safety glasses we would appreciate any and all donations. Thanks in advance.
Doug has info on the Florida Woodturning Symposium on 11/30 thru 12/2 in Lake Yale, FL. See Doug for more info.
The BOD discussed not having monthly meetings during July & August due to low attendance. This does not preclude members getting together informally and it might be a good time to call a few friends and get together at someone’s basement or for a meal. We will discuss it our next SIG meeting. The BOD voted to send $50.00 to AAW to help defray the cost of our insurance plan that covers our meetings etc. Meeting adjourned at 10:30 PM.
