Finger Lakes Woodturners

FLW December Newsletter

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on Monday, January 8th. Remember to note the change caused by the holiday on January 1st. Mark your calendars since there will be no further reminders between now and then. Remember to bring your "Instant Galley" items. We will have an instant gallery at every meeting.

RWS Table

As an ongoing function, we would like to have table at all of the RWS pre-meetings. Call it the "Turning SIG Display Table". This responsibility falls to the Vice President. On a monthly basis, he will be arranging with the membership to insure we put on a display we can be proud of.

New Officers

January brings the installation of new officers. Per the October election, the new slate of officers is: President – Doug Crittenden; Vice-President – Bill Tschorke; Secretary – Ed DeMay; and Treasurer – Don Osborne.

January Presentation

Jim Echter will make the January presentation. Jim will demonstrate the use of the skew. For those who haven’t mastered this tool (and those that "think" they have), make sure that you make it to this meeting.

Prize Winner

Erwin Tschanz was the winner of the prize in the December meeting Instant Gallery. The prize was an AAW turning video and two of the AAW project books. There were many fine works presented and the winner was selected by drawing. Thanks to all who brought items.

George Hatfield Tour

As noted in the BOD minutes, the board has made inquiries into hosting George Hatfield during his US tour next year. He will be in the states during September and October. While nothing has been committed yet, pencil in the weekend of September 8th and 9th. That is the tentative date when we would host George. One day would be a demonstration and one day would be a hands-on workshop. Ballpark numbers would be $25 for FLW members for the demonstration day and $65 for the hands-on, one on one workshop. George makes a US tour from his native Australia once every year or two. He comes very highly recommended from the likes of John Jordan, Nick Cook, and Bonnie Klein. Gene Harmon and Ward Donahue have experienced George’s presentations and workshops first hand and speak very highly of him. More details as plans are made.

Minutes of the Board of Directors meeting -
December 12, 2000

Doug Crittenden called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM at Kurt Hertzog’s house. Present were Doug Crittenden, Ward Donahue, Bill Tschorke, and Don Osborne. Ed DeMay was absent. The group waited believing Ed was delayed by weather but began business at 6:20 when it appeared that he would not attend.

Doug reviewed the AAW Educational Grant that he has been working on. The paperwork is due at the AAW in January to be considered the coming year. The maximum grant is $1000. Doug’s write-up detailed the need for a lathe, tools, accessories, and safety equipment. Discussion of the write-up focused on the actual verbiage since the request form lays out the format. The group felt that the proposed write-up did not capture the appropriate description of the situation and recommended changes. Ward, who has experience in writing funding proposals, made suggestions for changes. Doug will rewrite it and canvass the group with the rewrite.

Doug expressed his thanks to the departing board members for their contributions to the organization. The club now has its affiliation with the RWS and the AAW, a functional set of By-Laws, a workable meeting schedule and format, and a sound financial footing with nearly $800 of uncommitted funds in the treasury. Discussion turned the need to have a turn over on the board each year. The rut to avoid is the same officers, over and over. If that occurs, the organization risks getting stagnant. The goal is to have 100% turnover since the 2-month overlap and the availability of the old officers for advice and counsel should prevent any problems.

Kurt reported that the opt-in mailing list has had zero response. The announcement was made in the regular meeting, written up in the minutes, and published on the web site. There have been no responses from any of the membership requesting to have their information included in a list provided to selected vendors. No further action will be taken on this item.

Kurt reviewed the reported mail newsletter problems. On occasion, members have indicated that they did not receive their newsletter. Kurt reviewed his method for mailing the newsletters. They are all prepared at one time. They all have computer generated, typed mailing labels with Postnet bar coding. The labels are individually attached to each of the newsletters and after posting are all mailed at the same time from inside the main Post Office on Jefferson Road. Kurt mails a copy to his own address to be sure that the mailing takes place and also to monitor the delivery time. To date, he has never had a problem with his copy or had it take more than 2 days for delivery. He could offer no explanation for the occasional missing newsletter other than "lost in the mail" since the same mailing list is used each month. Since the problem doesn’t appear to repeat by member or geographic location, there doesn’t appear to be any recourse except to replace the missing copy. There are only 12 mailed copies, with the bulk of the membership having electronic copies via the website.

Don Osborne requested a write-up on the Treasurer’s job. The newsletter ran a write-up of all of the BOD job functions but did not have a Treasurer’s write-up available. This is for documentation for the BOD in coming years. Don will request a write-up from the current Treasurer Ed DeMay.

Kurt had the hand off package for the incoming Secretary, which included the responsibilities, and techniques he uses to accomplish these. Included were a write-up and a disk with all of the existing mailing lists, membership roster, By-Laws, forms, and ecopies of past newsletters. The incoming Secretary was not present so Kurt will get with him outside of this meeting. A copy of the write-up was provided to the present BOD members.

The group discussed the upcoming George Hatfield tour. George will be in the US during September and October of 2001. He comes highly recommended as a demonstrator and workshop teacher from Gene Harmon and Ward Donahue. Both have been to workshops and demonstrations by George on previous US tours. The group discussed Georges’ pricing and tentative schedule before deciding that the club would try to host George for both a demonstration day and workshop day. Kurt will contact George via email and solicit potential dates. It is important that the weekend of George’s visit not conflict with any RWS function. Any date conflict risks the problem of sufficient attendance at both functions. Ward tentatively offered his workshop as a site for the hands-on workshop. Don indicated that there might be a possibility of using a church basement as well.

The group reviewed the need to remind the membership of the pending dues deadline. Kurt will put a reminder in the newsletter. The financial audit has taken place and the books have been transferred to Don Osborn. The reminder will include Don’s address as the place to send the checks.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM for refreshments and discussion on solving the world’s problems.

Minutes of the December 4th, 2001 Finger Lakes Woodturners Meeting at RIT

President Doug Crittenden called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. There were 29 attendees, including the 5 guests. The guests for evening were Ted VanZandt, Joe Cummings, Connie Gates, Mike Brawley, and Zak Spath.

The Treasurer’s report indicated that the club was in the black with $741 in the treasury. The need for an independent auditor to effect the transition was brought up. Jim Hotaling was strong armed into the position. He will work with the outgoing and incoming Treasurers to certify the books for the transition.

The Secretary’s report covered the Newsletter had been sent. Some members indicated that they had not received it. The proof copy did arrive at the Secretary’s house so the NLs were processed by the Post Office. The members who indicated they didn’t receive them will check to see if they did indeed overlook them. There we no changes in mailing addresses so any missing NLs may be have lost by the Post Office.

Other items brought up by the Secretary were the tool steel for hook tools, the mirrors for turning projects, and the bearings/vacuum pumps for the vacuum projects. The steel is available for the hook tool projects. It is 3/8" oil hardening tool steel cut to 12" lengths. It is available for $2 for those who indicated they wanted it. The Treasurer, Ed DeMay is handling the transactions. The 2" beveled mirrors, provided by one of the Buffalo area turners, were available for $1.25 each. This would be the last meeting that they would be available, as Kurt will be returning the unsold mirrors to the Buffalo club this Thursday. Those who didn’t pick up their bearings, they were available tonight. The pumps were still "on order" and would be checked on this Thursday.

The Instant Gallery items were covered. The owners of the items did a brief description of the items and any unique features of the item or it’s creation. Those participating in the Instant Gallery were Doug Crittenden, Kurt Hertzog, Ed DeMay, Dave Schwardt, Don Osborn, Ted Lehman, Bill Tschorke, Erwin Tschanz, Bob McFadden, and Jim Hotaling. There was a drawing for the AAW Project Books and Video as a prize among those participating in the Instant Gallery. Erwin Tschanz won the books and video.

The Christmas tree ornament, left from the fundraiser, was put in a raffle. The ornament, made and donated by Jim Hotaling, was $2 a ticket and it was won by Bill Tschorke. The proceeds were donated to the treasury. John D’Errico donated a Record woodworking vise to the club for auction. Jim Hotaling conducted the auction, providing much entertainment for the crowd. The winning bid was $40 from John O’Brien with the proceeds to the treasury.

Ralph Mosher made the evening’s presentation. Ralph, mainly a bowl turner, presented the sharpening and use of the scraper. Ralph showed the many sizes and shapes available. The demonstration focused on the versatility of the scraper and how a ready for finish type of cut can be made. The demonstration concluded the meeting around 8:45 PM.
