RWS has
a business membership available for companies wishing to support the organization.
Business memberships cost $100 per year and entitle the owner, or their representative,
the same benefits as a regular member. In addition, a business membership allows
the business to have a display table at the pre-meetings (the no selling at the
meeting rule applies to them as well).
The business can have a link from the RWS
website to their website and a cumulative total of one equivalent page of advertising
in the RWS newsletter. If you know of businesses that might be interested, please encourage
them to join.
Jim Altemus, whose woodworking favorites are canoes and Queen Anne tables, is
a volunteer at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. The museum, located in
Mumford, NY, is a living history museum. It is comprised of many historic homes
and trades buildings from the Genesee region of western New York.
These historic
buildings have been dismantled, relocated to the Genesee Country Village site,
and restored in a village setting. Genesee Country Village is the third largest
interpretive museum of its type in the United States. It spans the history of
the first three quarters of the 19th century, from early pioneer
settlements in log cabins to elegant homes of Rochester
area businessmen. The early home of George Eastman is one of the villages’
attractions.
Trades interpreted in the museum include blacksmithing, tinsmithing,
printing, a wheelwright shop, coopering, and gunsmithing/cabinetmaking, among
others.
Jim works in the
cabinetmaker/gunsmith shop a couple of days a
week. He
demonstrates the use of antique hand tools in the building of period furniture,
some for use in village buildings. The small table in the
photo was made
entirely in the shop with only old hand tools,
and traditional hand cut joinery.
A family visit to Genesee Country can be a real treat if you haven’t had
the opportunity to visit. More information about the Genesee Country Village and
Museum can be found at http://www.gcv.org.
