Introduction to Wood Finishing

About this event
David Gilbert is working to develop this Local Workshop. It is intended to provide the basic processes for the simplest finishing and to introduce several of the most common finishing processes and materials. There are basically two types of finishes, those that form a film on the wood’s surface and those that penetrate the wood. Unfortunately, most woodworkers concentrate on their favorite finishes that work for them and don’t try anything else. This local workshop is intended to give them some experience with different finishes. This workshop is equally applicable to “flat-boarders” and “turners” alike.
Finishing a woodworking project will always depend on:
• Project’s wood
• Project’s design
• How that object will be used
Selecting a finish brings some other factors into play:
• Is the finish toxic during its application or use
• What does it cost
• Is it hard to apply and repair
• How durable is the finish
• What is its marketability (what the end-user expects).
The workshop will start with prepping the wood and move on to applying the finishes shown in bold below. The syllabus of this course is still in the works. I anticipate focusing on the seven finishes that are shown below in bold font. I am looking for are some RWS members who have experience with some of these finishes and would be willing to share their experience with others. Please contact David at 585-703-4424. If I already know you then you can expect a call.
There will be a small materials fee payable to David Gilbert
